I'm turning 30 on Tuesday the 1st.

It was recently pointed out to me that if I actually meet my current hoped-for schedule of finishing my PhD in the next two terms and graduating in May 2007, that means that *right now* is the time I ought to be finding opportunities and making applications for my next job. University hiring committees (the person who said this to me pretty much took for granted that being a prof is my goal) look at potential new hires in the Fall.

To be frank, the only consideration that seems really important when I consider my next career move is that I don't want to be single anymore. What I do to make money doesn't matter - I'm sure it'll work out one way or another, I've got plenty of skills people will pay for, and I have enough money in the bank to carry me through times of no work - but I want to put myself in a place where I'll have romantic opportunities. Kitchener-Waterloo has been disappointing in that regard.

But that's not something one writes on one's CV.

Matt: I wish women would ask me for dates.
Sun-Moon: You think you've got problems?

Sun-Moon: I haven't had a date in forever!

Sun-Moon: My chances with my own species seem to be pretty much zilch.

Matt: Nonsense. There must be plenty of male--

Matt: Oh.
