Many courageous people on this newsgroup and others have spoken out about
the dangers of water fluoridation but, until now, few of us have dared to
tell the whole story. There is an international conspiracy lead no doubt
by the Dominican potato cartels to weaken Northern cultures by SNEAKING a
toxic gas (fluorine) into our water supplies. Of course. Everyone knows
about that. What few people have realised even in this epoch of openness
(glasnost) is that there is an even sneakier conspiracy aimed at REMOVING
a vital trace element (iodine) from our precious bodily fluids. It isn't
clear who is behind this second conspiracy but I suspect an international
computer-related corporation which has a vested interest in keeping us in
an iodine-deprived state. I beg you, read my evidence with an open mind:
* Iodine is an important trace element in your diet. It's used by your
thyroid to produce an important hormone. If you don't get your iodine,
your neck swells and then you die. Only a small amount is necessary in
your diet, but that small amount is absolutely vital. (Remember this!)
* People in North America don't often die of iodine deficiency because our
governments require manufacturers of table salt to mix small amounts of it
into the salt. (Reference: _World Book Encyclopedia_, 1984, vol I pg 292)
* People in coastal areas (like LOS ANGELES and JAPAN) don't have iodine
problems anyway because there's a lot of iodine in the ocean's water and
it kinda gets into the air and so they breathe it in and it doesn't much
matter whether their foods have iodine added by a benevolent government.
* Notice that disproportionate numbers of computer programmers are of Asian
descent and eat a diet rich in foods like SEAWEED which are high in iodine.
Among computer programmers who are not of Asian descent, a disproportionate
number of them enjoy eating Asian food. (Reference: _The Jargon File 3.0_)
* Computer programmers are famous for their love of
junk foods most of which come coated in salt, which
has been spiked with iodine at government's orders.
HAVE YA
* Computer programmers are very smart. HAD YER
Lots of computer programmers come from IODINE?
places (like LOS ANGELES and JAPAN) on
the coast. CAN THIS BE A COINCIDENCE?
If you don't believe this just ask your friendly local
Chemistry student (politely) for a peek at her Period-
-ic Table and look at the Halogens. Look at where you
find FLUORINE, CHLORINE, and IODINE. You can see that
FLUORINE is right above CHLORINE and it's much more to
be feared from a poisoning point of view. If going UP
on the table is BAD, going DOWN is good (and we can be
sure that that's true) so we might as well go down all
the way to the bottom, to IODINE. Of course you could
try to go one level further to ASTATINE, but it is too
HOT with radioactivity, which would melt the ICE CREAM
too fast. We must be content with element 53, IODINE.
It's not enough to pay LIP SERVICE to public safety by speaking out against
FLUORIDATION from the comfort and safety of your pathetic little ADULT life
just because your thyroids have gone quiescent from age and senility. JUST
THINK OF THE CHILDREN! Excess fluoride, despite its toxicological effects,
is not the real danger. We must be vigilant for the tell-tale signs of any
developing IODINE DEFICIT. Without an ample supply of iodine is there hope
of ever catching up to our competitors in LOS ANGELES and JAPAN, where each
tot has his or her own little bottle of the halogen of hackerhood handed to
them at birth by a benevolent government? We must take action today to fix
the lack of iodine in our diets. WE HAVE GOT NAUGHT TO LOSE BUT LUSERHOOD!

Can you be more specific about what you mean by "an unusable form"? All iodide ions are the same when they're dissolved in water. Are you talking about covalent iodine or something?
Note that the article we are commenting on was humour.

* People in North America don't often die of iodine deficiency because our governments require manufacturers of table salt to mix small amounts of it into the salt.
But people in North America and much of the rest of the world are suffering from all kinds of diseases that would be prevented if your governments required "manufacturers" of table salt to leave the iodine in the salt in the first place. They take out the usable form of iodine (which occurs naturally in salt) and replace it with an unusable form.
