I spent the last three days attending the copyright consultation meeting in Ottawa, which is why I haven't posted any updates here. Now I'm working on writing a report, similar to the one from Toronto. That'll be posted here when it's ready.
Just as a fast summary: it went pretty well. I had a good time, enjoyed meeting some of the people I've been communicating with over the Net, didn't get as much chance to speak in the meeting as I'd have liked, but did get to make some good points. Overall, compared to Toronto, this one had more representation from non-corporate organizations (such as educational and library groups), and a lot less from the movie and record industries. The DirecTV reps had to slink back to the States with their tails between their legs, after having their pie charts mocked in a rare display of Canadian patriotism. The representative from Bell Canada said some intelligent things - not a surprise to me because I had read their written submission a few months back, but I was certainly surprised at that time. As I said to her later, "I hadn't expected to find myself on the same side with Bell Canada, of any issue." The representatives from CANCOPY were as random as in Toronto - to the point that I wondered which side they're actually on. They seem to be arguing against my views, but doing it so badly as to actually help the people who agree with me. Anyway, all this will be described in more detail in my upcoming report.
